According to Georgi Koshlakov, chairman of Tajikistan’s State Economic Committee, national gold production in 1991 was closer to 72,500 oz., and is expected to double over the next few years.
The authorities have decided to invest in new refining facilities to tap even further into the mines. One such facility is near Khujand, which should become operational by year-end. The refinery will have a capacity to produce 60,900 oz. annually, nearly three-quarters of national output.
The Khujand facility is the first modern processing facility built in Tajikistan, and is part of a concerted program to rid itself of its dependence on other former Soviet republics. Currently, Tajikistan sends its raw concentrates to Chimkent in Kazakhstan for refining.
Tajikistan’s largest gold-producing plant is at Taror, near Pendjikent on the border with Uzbekistan.
