At a recent conference Rory Moore, manager of BHP Canada’s diamond program, provided an overview on the origin and emplacement of diamonds, as well as details of the company’s joint venture with Dia Met Minerals in the Lac de Gras region.
Moore said a production decision may be made in June of 1994, after results are in hand from bulk-sampling of two diamondiferous pipes this winter. A 35-inch drill will extract kimberlite from one target, while the other bulk sample will be extracted from underground. The decline is on schedule (about 400 metres from the portal in early December), even though the underground contractor had to contend with complications caused by ungrouted exploration drill holes.
Moore said a 112-man camp has been built on site and is 95% occupied. The airstrip has handled the delivery of 3.2 million lb. of freight on 425 flights. A network of roads to the targets is 30% complete and a diamond recovery plant is being assembled on site.
