Million-ounce gold producers in North America numbered four last year, with Barrick Gold (TSE) leading the way.
Barrick swallowed Lac Minerals in a corporate takeover last summer, and their combined production exceeded 2.3 million oz. in 1994.
The enlarged Barrick was followed by Placer Dome at 2.05 million oz., Homestake Mining (NYSE) at 1.69 million oz. and Newmont Gold (NYSE) at 1.67 million oz.
Bidding to join the select group is Santa Fe Pacific Gold (NYSE), which yielded 936,000 oz. in 1994. Santa Fe was spun off as a publicly listed company last year.
Another large North American producer, Echo Bay Mines (TSE), turned out 818,000 oz., last year.
