A new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system will save Placer Dome a bundle of money at its Campbell gold mine in northwestern Ontario.
The gold producer figures it will save $220,000 annually on its energy bill for the Balmerton mill operation.
Under the direction of Gordon Allen, Ontario Hydro’s industrial business market adviser, a feasibility study was drawn up to address the energy-load, ventilation and waste-heat problems.
The project consisted of installing a new ventilation system that removed the electrical makeup air units on the roof. The large amounts of waste heat are now redistributed through the plant, which has reduced the use of the existing electrical heating.
Ontario Hydro contributed $190,000 to the $430,000 project.
