Renowned geologist William Fleming James died on Nov. 25 in Toronto. He was 96.
Best remembered as a pioneer in resource development, James was inducted in-to the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame in 1990.
He earned a B.Sc. at St. Francis Xavier University in 1918, an M.Sc. at McGill University in 1921 and a Ph.D. at Princeton University in 1923. St. Francis Xavier University in 1980 inaugurated the Dr. W.F. James Chair of studies in pure and applied sciences in recognition of his “humane instinct and sterling integrity” as well as the “worthy causes” he championed. After working with the Geological Survey of Canada for a decade (1918-29), James began his career as a consulting
geologist. The company established by him and his partners was known as James and Gill; James and Buffam; and James, Buffam and Cooper. The firm performed feasibility studies and gave advice on geological as well as financial matters pertaining to a variety of mines. Among its clients were Siscoe Gold Mines, Macassa Mines, Broulan Porcupine Mines, Aunor Gold Mines and Bethlehem Copper.
In 1975, he left the partnership to become an independent.
