College cancels mining program

The College of Eastern Utah has dropped its mining program after 30 years, owing to declining enrolment and state legislature-inflicted budget restrictions.

The area in which the university is situated has lost more than 500 mining jobs in the past five years. “It [the mining program] isn’t a real necessary thing anymore,” says Brad King, CEU’s vice-president of institutional advancement and student services.

CEU has been forced to cut various other programs because of budget restraints. These include cross-country, track, and speech and debate.

The Utah College of Applied Technology, in Logan, has the state’s remaining mining courses.
