More than 1,000 earth scientists from around the world are coming to the University of Victoria in Victoria, B.C., for the May 17-19 annual meeting of the Geological Association of Canada (GAC) and the Mineralogical Association of Canada.
The meeting will be hosted by the Pacific section of GAC and organized by volunteers from the university’s Centre of Earth and Ocean Research, the geological survey branch of the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, and the Pacific Geoscience Centre of the Geological Survey of Canada.
Delegates from Canada, the U.S., Russia, Japan and elsewhere are expected to attend.
Scheduled are three symposia, 18 special topical sessions and several general subject sessions. Among the topics will be how continents are assembled and the effects of changes in the global plate tectonics regime. Also on the agenda are topics related to mineral deposits throughout the Canadian Cordillera.
Free public lectures will be presented. A special workshop for public school teachers will also be organized, and lecturers will discuss a variety of topics related to the teaching of earth sciences in schools. Field trips are also planned.
