Exploratory drilling west of the Voisey Bay
nickel-copper-cobalt discovery is expanding the scope of the Labrador project.
Owner Diamond Fields Resources (TSE) reports that holes 95-89, 95-93 and 95-98 (on line 500E) penetrated “strongly disseminated to semi-massive sulphide mineralization” in true thicknesses of 80 to 100 metres.
The discovery mineralization on this section is described as dipping steeply at about 75 to the north. Mineralization has been confirmed to a depth of 190 metres below surface by hole 93, and remains open to depth.
Stepout hole 95-94, drilled 600 metres farther to the west on line 100W, intersected at least 170 metres of strongly
disseminated to semi-massive mineralization immediately below overburden. The hole, which was still in mineralization at
presstime, extends the known strike length of the discovery to more than 1.8 km. At presstime, assay results from these holes were not yet available, but they are not expected to be as high in grade as those that intersected massive sulphide
mineralization within the main ovoid.
As the geological team on site told The Northern Miner during a recent site visit, it is possible to visually estimate grade because of the consistency of mineralization within the various sequences of the deposit. “When we see massive sulphide
mineralization in the core, we know it will grade about the same as other holes in the massive sulphide ovoid,” said Albert
Chislett, one of the two prospectors responsible for discovering the desposit.
As reported earlier, the weighted average of the drill intercepts within the ovoid is estimated at 3.71% nickel, 2.14% copper and 0.15% cobalt. The semi-massive and disseminated mineralization still carries values of between 1% and 2% nickel, plus
appreciable copper and cobalt grades. “It’s still ore-grade, still valuable rock, but we’ve been spoiled,” Chislett added.
So far, 98 holes have been drilled using three rigs. Teck (TSE) which has a 10.4% interest in Diamond Fields, is in the process of generating a preliminary minable reserve for the ovoid based on drilling to date.
Diamond Fields has reported assay results from 16 holes, 12 of which were drilled on the perimeters of the ovoid-shaped massive sulphide body. The newly completed assay results on the edges of the ovoid are as follows (note that “overall” includes
lower-grade, disseminated mineralization):
