The first national forum on land use, entitlement and claims is being organized by chiefs and officials of First Nations from across Western Canada.
The forum will run from April 14 to 16 at the Calgary Convention Centre.
Keynote speakers include Chief Roy Fox of the Blood Tribe, Canada’s largest First Nation, and David Lester, president of the Denver-based Council of Energy Resource Tribes.
Also scheduled to speak are: Elijah Harper, member of Parliament for Churchill, Man.; Ronald Irwin, minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development; Grand Chief Matthew Coon Come; and National Chief Ovid Mercredi.
In addition, presentations will be given by associations representing aboriginal mining, forestry, tourism and fishery interests.
At the opening of the forum, Irwin will sign an agreement with Chief Terry Buffalo to create the Indian Resources Council, a body evolved from the Indian Energy Corporation. The council will explore opportunities for native resource development and management.
