Canadian mining companies curb overall emissions

The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) reports that 31 of its member companies have reduced their emissions of 12 major substances by 68% since 1988.

These reductions are close to the 71% target originally set by the industry for the year 2000.

The MAC’s report, entitled Voluntary Emissions Reduction, suggests that companies are five years ahead of schedule in their emission-reduction programs, with further reductions of 19% expected by the turn of the century.

The 31 companies, which account for 92% of the country’s base metal production, voluntarily accepted the federal government’s challenge to reduce their emissions into air, water and land.

Says MAC President George Miller: “The report provides further evidence that the nation’s mining companies are taking seriously their responsibilities to contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.’
