Vancouver-based DiamondWorks (DMW-T) has received more than US$3.1 million from the sale of its first parcel of diamonds from the Luo diamond mine in northeastern Angola.
The parcel, sold in Antwerp, Belgium, totalled 10,375 carats. The gem diamond portion totalled 6,870 carats, and accounted for seven of the eight lots. The gems sold for an average of US$439 per carat.
The best lot, consisting of 24 stones, range in size from 10.96 to 33.62 carats. These were sold at an average price of US$1,601 per carat.
In September, the company produced about 5,000 carats from Luo, including a 1-day production total of 406 carats. DiamondWorks also holds more than 4,200 carats in inventory.
A prefeasibility program of drilling and sampling is under way on Camatchia, the largest of five diamond-bearing kimberlite pipes on the Luo concession.
