Canabrava Diamond (CNB-V) is set to begin a first-phase drill program to test newly discovered kimberlites on the company’s Whitefish Lake property, 25 km northeast of Wawa, Ont.
The property consists of 820 sq. km of leased land and staked claims.
In 1997, the company completed airborne geophysical surveys and geochemical sampling programs for kimberlite indicator minerals at Whitefish Lake.
During the course of the field work, two kimberlite bodies were identified and the geochemical sampling program defined 12 distinct
diamond-indicator-mineral dispersion haloes on the property. Extensive studies of the recovered indicator minerals show strong evidence of minimal transport from their kimberlite source, Canabrava reports. The company believes that one or more kimberlite bodies may be associated with each of the 12 dispersion haloes.
The kimberlites discovered during the 1997 program are clustered within one of the 12 dispersion haloes. In addition to the exposed kimberlites, there are a number of discrete magnetic targets within the dispersion haloes that may represent additional kimberlite pipes. The first phase of drilling will test the known kimberlites and at least six of the magnetic targets.
Drilling equipment will be moved to the site during the first week of June, and drilling is expected to commence shortly thereafter.
In addition to the drilling program, field crews will initiate tighter geochemical sampling and geological mapping programs within each of the 12 identified anomalies to help define additional kimberlite pipes for drill testing. After the success of last year’s program, Canabrava expanded its property position. Newly claimed areas will be sampled during the 1998 program.
Canabrava is 52%-owned by Southwestern Gold (SWG-T).
