The engineering and construction arm of London-based Kvaerner has been awarded a $9-million contract to upgrade the copper production facilities at Inco’s division in Thompson, Man.
The 3-stage project, already under way, involves upgrading the concentrator, refinery and smelter.
A new reagent addition system in the concentrator is designed to boost production of copper concentrate to 10,000 tons per year, whereas upgrades in the copper arsenic sulphide precipitation system are expected to bump up daily production to 14 tons. Modifications will also be made to the roaster’s feed system. Sulphide anode slimes produced by the smelter will be sent to Inco’s Copper Cliff facilities in Ontario for further processing.
The entire project is scheduled for completion in November.
This is not the first time the companies have worked together. Kvaerner built the 1D and Birchtree mines, also in the Thompson camp, and worked at Inco’s operations in Sudbury, Ont., and Indonesia.
