AngloGold, unions ink AIDS deal

South African-based AngloGold and five labour unions have signed an agreement to minimize the impact of HIV/AIDS in the workplace.

The unions include the National Union of Mineworkers, MWU Solidarity, the National Employees’ Trade Union, the South African Equity Workers’ Association, and the United Association of South Africa.

The deal calls for the creation of programs which address the rights of employees, and which ensure testing, confidentiality and disclosure of information.

AngloGold is currently studying ways of providing anti-retroviral drugs to employees diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

“AngloGold has a well-developed response to HIV/AIDS, ranging from preventive programs to assistance and treatment,” says Chief Executive Officer Bobby Godsell.

Senzani Zokwana, president of the National Union of Mineworkers, says he hopes the new agreement sets a trend in the industry and encourages more government involvement.
