Employees of Noranda Minerals, Horne Division and Chadbourne Division, on strike since Nov. 5 of last year, agreed to a new 3-year contract with the company effective Feb 23.
The Rouyn-Noranda area workers in northwestern Quebec, members of the Canadian National Trade Union, voted 82% in favor of the new collective agreement which will run until Feb 22, 1990. The old agreement expired Aug 31 of last year.
The base salary for the more than 1,200 employees involved will increase 20 cents semi-annually, for a total increase of $1.20 during the 3-year term. Improvements to the employee pension plan and to the benefits program are included. In addition, a lump sum payment of $1,400 will be paid within 15 days upon the signing of the agreement.
Under the new union agreement, hourly rates will range from $12.42 to $15.055, and at the end of the current contract from $13.42 to $16.055.
Noranda operates a custom copper smelter in the Rouyn-Noranda area, which acts as the main feed for the company’s refinery in Montreal. The company also has two small mining operations in the area, Remnor and Chadbourne, producing low-grade gold.
