The first half of 1987 was a record-breaking period for the Vancouver Stock Exchange. Trading volume was 2.6 billion shares, up 49% from last year, and the volume was the highest half-year total ever recorded. At $3.6 billion, trading value was 60% higher and also the biggest ever recorded. The average price per share for the period was $1.41 versus $1.31 a year ago.
There were 1.7 million transactions representing a 52% increase which was also a record. In the 6-month period, financings were a record $687.9 million, a 140% increase from 1986, and private placements represented $580 million of the total. Eight major financings were completed that were valued over $10 million.
The VSE index set a new record May 8 when it closed at 2015.48 and the June 30 close of 1850.87 was 29% higher than the previous year. Trading volume in the first six months of 1987 accounted for 33.1% of the total on Canadian stock exchanges, down fractionally from last year.
