Among the participants in the ceremony was Minister Hugh O’Neil. He said: “Establishing a facility where the mining sector, Laurentian University and the Ontario government can work together will ensure that Sudbury takes its place as a world leader in mining-related work.”
Labor Minister Gerry Phillips noted that “in the past seven years, lost time injury accidents in the mining industry have decreased almost 40%” and was “confident that the new centre’s research will lead to more significant improvements in mining safety.”
Northern Development Minister Rene Fontaine said he was “delighted that Sudbury will benefit from the relocation of the head offices of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines and the Ministry of Labor’s mining health and safety branch.” The new $20- million office building is under construction at the corner of Cedar and Young Streets.
