The poll, which involved a national survey of 1,503 people, showed that 70% would not oppose mineral prospecting in parks and wilderness areas provided it did not disrupt the environment. What’s more, fully 64% would support at least some mining in a wilderness area.
Judging by the same poll, however, the public is not so sure about developing mines if they might disturb local wildlife. Some 68% said that a new mine should not be developed if it is shown that local wildlife may be disturbed and, if a proposed mine would limit opportunities for sports fishing in a local lake, 49% would decline the mine and take the fish.
Very clear responses from the public. What’s not so clear is how a mine can be discovered, developed and operated without having some effect on the environment.
