Once again, the department’s annual review of activities and poster displays will be held in conjunction with the 36th annual meeting of the Newfoundland branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM), slated for Nov 2-4.
Mineral exploration activity in the province for 1989 has again been healthy with expected exploration expenditures to be in the $30-35 million dollar range. To date new claims staked in 1989 total 15,526, bringing the number in good standing to 67,219. Many in the mining industry consider Newfoundland to be one of the prime areas for mineral exploration activity in the country with great potential for further discoveries.
A number of major and junior mining companies have recently established regional offices in the province, and others are considering establishing mineral exploration programs on the island and in Labrador.
Significant gold and base metal discoveries have been made in different geological settings on the island. Several new industrial mineral projects are also advancing to the production stage.
The open house, which takes place Nov 2, brings together geoscientists from the department as well as the Geological Survey of Canada and Memorial University of Newfoundland. This meeting is designed to make the mineral industry and the general public more aware of geoscientific activities of the department — activities that have been funded jointly by the federal and provincial governments under the Canada-Newfoundland Mineral Development Agreement.
The theme of the CIM meeting is “The Environment and the Mineral Industry.” Technical sessions take place all day Friday and Saturday morning. Registration for the CIM starts Nov 2 with the opening dinner that evening. Keynote speaker at the opening dinner is Roy Aitken, executive vice-president of Inco Ltd. Aitken is the vice- chairman of the National Task Force on Environment and Economy which was established by the Canadian Council of Resources and Environment Ministry in October, 1988.
