Newmont mine yields million oz.

A North American mine produced more than one million ounces gold in 1991.

The Gold Quarry mine of Newmont Gold (NYSE) in northeastern Nevada yielded about 1,025,000 oz. during the year. The mine set its million-ounce record Dec. 22, the company said.

Output from Gold Quarry totalled 939,800 oz. in 1990. It is scheduled to keep producing near the million-ounce level in 1992.

Newmont, North America’s largest gold producer, is expected to turn out about 1.55 million oz. gold from its mines on the Carlin Trend this year. To reach the record level, Newmont mined about 80 million tons of ore at Gold Quarry, treating 9.1 million tons at a pair of nearby mills. These milling operations yielded about three-quarters of the year’s output. The remainder was produced by the leaching of about 15.6 million tons of ore placed on leach pads.

The Gold Quarry deposit was commissioned by Newmont Gold in 1985 and it turned out 106,500 oz. gold that year. It is the largest of the company’s 16 gold deposits and as of the end of 1990, it contained 8.9 million oz. of proven and probable reserves.

Newmont Gold, 90.1% owned by Newmont Mining (NYSE), reported total gold reserves at the end of 1990 of 18.9 million oz.

In 1992, it is expected Placer Dome (TSE) will rival Newmont Gold in total output. North America’s third million-ounce producer in 1991 was Homestake Mining (NYSE).

Expected to join the million-ounce producer ranks in 1992 are American Barrick Resources (TSE) and LAC Minerals (TSE).
