The first four samples taken from outcropping kimberlites on Cyclone Capital’s (VSE) Somerset Island claims in the Northwest Territories have been crushed, concentrated and will be sent to John Gurney’s lab in South Africa.
The 50-70-lb. samples were taken from four of 21 known kimberlite occurrences on the Batty property, a group of 87 claims where diamond indicator minerals including pyrope garnet, ilmenite and chrome diopside have been identified. Two of the samples were taken from outliers of the Batty pipe, which has a diameter of 2,000 ft.
Cominco (TSE) has the right to acquire up to 50% of Cyclone’s interest in the Batty claims and future landholdings on Somerset Island.
Under a similar arrangement, Cyclone may earn a 100% interest — subject to back-in provisions — on all Cominco’s properties on Somerset Island, plus claims covering individual kimberlite pipes on Brodeur Peninsula and Bathurst Island.
Previous work by DeBeers and Cominco on the Somerset claims identified one or more kimberlites, favorable indicator minerals and, in four localities, microdiamonds.
Also holding arctic claims are two of Murray Pezim’s juniors. A joint venture, which consists of Galico Resources (VSE), International Impala Resources (VSE) and two individuals, acquired the ground. It covers a previously discovered kimberlite pipe, through staking, on Brodeur Peninsula.
