17 individuals nominated for Canadian Mining Hall of Fame

The Canadian Mining Hall of Fame has released the names of 17 nominees eligible for the next induction in Toronto on Jan. 11, 1993. The eight successful nominees will be announced before year-end. The 17 nominees are:

— Archibald Bell (1906-91) — “Archie” Bell led Noranda Inc.’s Canadian and international exploration efforts for 24 years.

— Bernard Brynelsen (1911- ) — A mining engineer with Noranda, he is credited with the discovery and development of the Boss Mountain, Bell Copper and Brenda Mines in British Columbia.

— Joseph Errington (1871-1942) — A mine developer and explorationist, he was associated with numerous mining ventures such as Steep Rock Iron Mines, Little Long Lac Gold Mines and MacLeod-Cockshutt Gold Mines. — Neil George (1908-88) — He was the first director of safety of the Quebec Mining Association, whose “Five-Point Safety System” revolutionized mine accident prevention in Canada and abroad.

— H.E.T. Haultain (1896-1961) — Former professor of mining engineering at the University of Toronto, Haultain taught Canadians the fundamentals of mining and milling. He developed the Superpanner and the Infrasizer and inaugurated the Iron Ring worn by professional engineers.

— William Jewitt (1897-1978) — A member of the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame, he worked for Cominco Ltd. for 34 years and pioneered aerial prospecting in Northern Canada.

— Robert Jowsey (1881-1965) — A mine finder and administrator, he was active in the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada and involved in all phases of property development.

— James McCrea (1923-53) — A mining engineer with Dome Mines, he was instrumental in the acquisition and development of the Sigma and Campbell Red Lake mines in Quebec and Ontario.

— Willet Miller (1866-1925) — The first provincial geologist of Ontario, he founded the Geological Branch of the Bureau of Mines, predecessor to the Ontario Geological Survey.

— James Norrie (1891-1945) — A mining engineer, he was involved in the discovery, development and operation of several gold mines in Northern Quebec. — Richard Porritt (1901-85) — During his 48-year career with Noranda, he was responsible for the development of the Waite-Amulet mine in Rouyn-Noranda, Que., and the Gaspe copper mine in Murdochville, Que. — Louis Renzoni (1913- ) — A chemical engineer with Inco Ltd. for over 30 years, he helped develop the company’s new chemical and metallurgical techniques used for processing nickel-copper ores.

— David Sloan (1881-1935) — A mining engineer, he was responsible for bringing the million-ounce Pioneer gold mine in British Columbia into production.

— Mervin Upham (1917- ) — A mining engineer responsible for building 20 new mines, he also pioneered shaft sinking through the Blairmore formation which led to the development of potash mining in Saskatchewan.

— Ossian Walli (1903-91) — An educator and creator of the Haileybury School of Mines, he served as principal for 22 years.

— Tuzo Wilson (1908- ) — A geophysicist, he is known for his early use of remote sensing and geophysics in geology, the delineation of the provinces of the Canadian Shield and his contributions to plate tectonic theory. — Harold Wright (1908- ) — A geologist and founding president of Western Mines (now Westmin Resources), he created Wright Engineers Ltd., a world-scale consulting firm specializing in the design of mills and processing plants.
