Planning for the Sanchez oxide project is proceeding, with owner Azco Mining (VSE) recently hiring engineering consultant Davy McKee to provide all engineering, procurement and construction management services to place the project into production.
The Sanchez project, about 10 miles northeast of Safford, Ariz., hosts preliminary reserves of about 168 million tons grading 0.34% copper at an estimated strip ratio of about 1.08-to-1 at a cutoff grade of 0.2% copper. The agreement with Davy McKee provides for a 2-phase program including preparation of all engineering, procurement and construction documents and plans to set a target price
as well as target completion dates.
The second phase of work includes all remaining work required to complete the construction and startup.
Azco is responsible for final mine planning, mine equipment acquisition, and preproduction stripping.
A feasibility study completed in 1990 recommended the project be put into production at an operating rate of 12 million tons per year to produce about 56 million lb. of cathode copper per year at a cash cost of about US49 cents per lb.
