Fipke garners PDAC Prospector award

Diamond explorer Charles Fipke has won the 1992 Bill Dennis Award for Prospector of the Year. The award is being presented at this year’s annual convention of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada in Toronto.

Fipke is being singled out for his key role in discovering the diamond property near Lac de Gras, N.W.T., which triggered one of the biggest staking rushes in Canadian history. The founder of Dia Met Minerals located the diamondiferous kimberlite pipe at Point Lake, where recent samples have returned a number of gem-quality diamonds.

The Northern Miner crowned Fipke its 1992 “Mining Man of the Year” in recognition of his technical skills and years of hard work and dedication. Fipke is but one of several PDAC award recipients. Developer of the Year is Louis Gignac, president and chief executive officer of Cambior. Under his leadership, Cambior has become a major Canadian gold producer with operating and exploration properties in Canada, the U.S., Mexico and South America. For his contributions to geochemistry and mineralogy as they apply to exploration, Robert Boyle receives a Distinguished Service award. Boyle has studied the Yellowknife gold deposits, lead-zinc-silver deposits in the Yukon, barite-sulphide deposits in Nova Scotia and the Bathurst sulphide deposits of New Brunswick. The former head of the geochemistry section of the Geological Survey of Canada has written numerous reports and the book, Gold: History and Genesis of Deposits.

Jack Patterson also receives a Distinguished Service award, for leading the B.C. and Yukon Chamber of Mines in its fight to maintain reasonable governmental regulations and taxation in British Columbia. Patterson was appointed managing director in 1980.

Winner of the Environment award is Vancouver-based Viceroy Resource Corp. The company’s Castle Mountain gold mine in San Bernardino Cty, Calif., makes provisions for land reclamation and protecting wildlife.

Guest speaker at this year’s awards banquet is New Bruns-wick Premier Frank McKenna.
