The exploration technology division of MITEC (Mining Industry Technology Council of Canada) is becoming an active agency through which industry funds are transferred to research groups.
Several research projects funded by the division, which was started up in 1992, have been completed, are in progress or are under consideration. Corporate membership consists of 21 exploration companies.
“Exploration in Canada faces many challenges in today’s investment climate,” said division chairman Barry Simmons. “One of these is the increasing cost of discovery.”
“The division has an important role to play in decreasing the cost, thereby maintaining Canada as a valid area for investing exploration dollars.” Under a 3-year program, the division will solicit proposals from selected researchers which will contribute to two problems areas: (1) improving the efficiency of exploration for volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits; and (2) determining the factors necessary for discovering a deposit comparable to Hemlo.
Proposals on other topics will not be solicited, but applications for support of other projects will be considered, based on individual technical merit. At the end of three years, two separate reports will be commissioned to summarize key elements of the various studies which have particular significance for exploration for VMS and Hemlo-style deposits.
