Four university students in British Columbia have formed a youth group to promote mining in the province.
Law student Lisa Skakun, a founding member of the B.C. Mine Society, said the goal is to create a broad-based membership of people aged 18-30 who support both mining and environmental protection as being economically desirable.
The intention is to provide a forum for dialogue among those involved in the province’s land and resources debate.
“We have been bombarded by preservationist groups that provide only one side of the issue,” Skakun said. “We are starting a membership drive to organize young people who believe our economic future depends on resource industries.” Skakun worked for several summers in mining to help finance her university education. She operated a sluice box and loader in the Yukon and was employed as a surveyor’s helper and warehouse assistant for a large operation in British Columbia.
The other founding members are Nicole Martin, pursuing a master of business administration degree; Hani Laman, working on his master’s thesis in construction management; and economics student James Faraday.
