U.S. gold output second in world

The U.S. moved into second position in 1990 among gold-producing nations, Gold Fields Mineral Services of London said in its annual review of the world gold industry.

The U.S. replaced the Soviet Union as the second-place producer. Continuing its ranking as the top producer was South Africa. Total global gold production rose to a record 1,734 tonnes, up by 3% from the previous year, the research company reported.
