Strike ends at Faro lead-zinc mine

The 400 union members employed by Curragh Resources’ (TSE) Faro lead-zinc mine in the Yukon have ratified an agreement to end a 10-week strike at the open pit operation.

The 3-year deal includes a wage increase of 17.6%, a provision for severance protection in the event of any layoff or closure and a registered retirement savings plan. By October, 1993, the journeyman rate will be $22.53 per hour.

Other features of the agreement include lower busing costs to and from the mine site and a provision that allows pregnant employees to move to less hazardous jobs.

In 1990, the Faro mine produced a record 548,484 tons of concentrate.
