Development of a potential hydroelectric site and primary aluminum reduction plant in southern Chile is planned by Noranda Aluminum, a unit of Noranda (TSE), and Proyectos de Aysen SA of Santiago.
The companies said a feasibility study for the Alumysa project confirms that a reduction plant with a capacity of about 230,000 tonnes per year could be supported by a power plant on the Cuervo River. The total investment, including environmental protection, is estimated to be US$1.5 billion. Tennessee-based Noranda Aluminum intends to form a partnership with other potential investors for the project. It is estimated that production is 5-6 years away.
