Production at the new QSL lead smelter in Trail, B.C., will not resume until the first quarter of 1991, Cominco (TSE) reports. Long lead times for equipment and an increase in the scope of work to be done have prevented the company from resuming production this month, as originally scheduled. The smelter has been closed since March, when Cominco identified significant process and mechanical difficulties.
Before production begins, more natural gas injectors will be installed in the reduction zone of the 40- metre reactor where the smelting process takes place. To supplement the reducing action of the natural gas, the company will also install an injection system for pulverized coal. The modifications will cost an estimated $18 million.
In the meantime, lead production rates at the old smelter have increased to about 80% of traditional levels. The company says these rates will be maintained until the new lead smelter is fully operational.
