The Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy’s method of mineral claim- staking (commonly known as paper-staking) will likely form the basis of a new, streamlined system of claim-staking for the country of Ghana. A representative of the African nation’s government recently spent a month in Nova Scotia studying how mineral licenses are issued in the province as well as the method used for claim-staking. He said Ghana’s minerals commission had looked at claim- staking systems in a number of countries and had found Nova Scotia’s to be one of the best.
The mining industry in Ghana employs about 35,000 people and is second in size only to the cocoa industry. Ghana’s population is about 14 million. It is a significant gold-producing nation, having turned out 13.2 tons of gold in 1985.
Other minerals mined include diamonds, manganese, bauxite and iron ore.
