John J. Crowhurst, one of Canada’s best known mining engineers died Aug 13 at the Delta Hospital in Ladner, B.C. at the age of 69.

“Jack” was educated in Vancouver, graduating from the University of B.C. in 1941 with a B.A. Sc. degree in mining engineering. He was a member of the Professional Engineers Association of B.C., CIMM and AIME. During World War II, he served as a pilot officer navigator.

From 1941 to 1952, Jack worked in various capacities for Cominco, Sheep Creek Gold Mines and Granby Mining. Thereafter, he served as general manager of Granduc Mines and Highland Belle Mines in British Columbia, the Dawn Mining Company near Spokane, Wash., and Canada Tungsten Mining Corp., in the Northwest Territories which property he was responsible for bringing into production.

He entered the consulting field in 1967 as a partner in Bacon and Crowhurst Ltd. and carried out work in a number of different countries. From 1976 to 1980, he was employed by McIntyre Mines as general manager of their coal mining division and later as executive vice-president of operations. He then joined Pegasus Gold Mines and was responsible for making their heap leaching gold operation in Montana extremely profitable.

From 1983 to 1986 he served as President of Granduc Mines and at the same time as executive vice- president of Grandview Resources, he was responsible for bringing into production their Carson Hill mine in Calaveras Cty., Ca. In recent years he had become an outstanding authority in the gold leaching operations in the United States and was a director of numerous companies including Granduc Mines, Canada Tungsten and Grandview Resources.
