Letters to the Editor Already in place

You may be interested to know that legislation passed in British Columbia earlier this year does just that.

The Mines Act (which governs reclamation, among other things) provides for the establishment of mine-specific reclamation funds. The Mineral Tax Act stipulates that contributions to those funds are tax deductible.

Unfortunately, in order for this legislation to be truly effective the federal Income Tax Act will require parallel amendments along the lines suggested in your editorial. Bruce McRae Assistant Deputy Minister Mineral Resources Division Victoria, B.C.
