Joint-venture partners Aurizon Mines (VSE) and Cambior (TSE) believe results from the first six holes at the Sleeping Giant gold mine have the potential to increase minable reserves.
Drilling below the shaft has extended the structure an additional 120 metres below the lowest (415-metre) working level.
So far, six holes have been completed on the property, situated in northwestern Quebec, with all holes intersecting the structure. Five of the holes intersected economic grades averaging 16.24 grams gold per tonne over minable widths of 1.4 metres.
The holes were drilled 40, 80 and 120 metres below the 415-metre level, with two holes drilled to each depth. The results are said to be significant because the area below the shaft has never been tested.
Estimated gold production for 1994 is more than 1 million grams (33,000 oz.), with Cambior and Aurizon sharing production equally.
