A modest increase in claim- staking activity has been reported in the Batachawana Bay area, north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., following the release of an airborne geophysical survey by the Ontario government on Aug. 30. According to Sheila Lessard, mining recorder for the Sault Ste. Marie division, about 296 claims were recorded as of Sept. 25, up from 103 a month earlier.
She said the monthly average number of claims recorded in the division so far this year has been about 175-200. Most of the claims in the recent bout of activity were staked in Olson and Gapp twps., she said.
In late August, airborne electromagnetic and magnetic maps were released for an area covering roughly 26 townships along the greenstone belt which extends northeast from Batchawana Bay.
The Batchawana greenstone belt hosts a number of gold and base metal prospects and was extensively explored for copper during 1950-73.
