The Geological Association of Canada (GAC), and the Mineralogical Association of Canada (MAC) are each sponsoring a short course at the upcoming joint annual meeting in Waterloo, Ont.
The GAC short course, titled “Alteration and alteration processes associated with ore-forming systems,” is sponsored by the Mineral Deposits Division and is being held on May 13-15.
The course will look at advanced mineralogical and geochemical techniques used to examine alteration and will target a variety of ore deposits in both grass roots and detailed stages of evaluation. Deposit/alteration types include: platinum-group elements, porphyry copper-gold, granophile, epithermal gold-silver, mesothermal gold, skarn gold, and volcanogenic massive sulphide systems.
The MAC short course, titled “The environmental geochemistry of sulphide mine wastes”, will be held on May 14 and 15.
The course will deal with the fundamentals of geochemical and hydrogeological mechanisms controlling the generation and release of low-quality drainage waters from mine wastes. Some of the topics to be discussed include: physical hydrology and modelling of mill tailings impoundments, the mineralogy of tailings, the waste-rock environment, sulphide oxidation mechanisms and the geochemistry of cyanide.
The cost of each course is $295 for professionals and $150 for students. For further information contact: Hertha Enns, Waterloo’94 Office, Tel: 519-888-4567 ext. 5638.
