Harry Michie, who for 40 years was active in the Canadian gold mining industry as a geologist, recently died in Toronto. He was 66.
For almost two decades, Michie was associated with the Coniagas Mines group of companies, which he joined in 1972 as chief geologist of Quebec Sturgeon River Mines. In 1983, he became St Andrew Goldfields’ vice-president of exploration, and was instrumental in bringing the Stock Township gold mine in Timmins, Ont., into production in 1989. He was also president of Garrison Creek Consolidated Mines.
Born in Forfar, Scotland, in 1925, he attended the University of St. Andrews in Scotland where he received his B.Sc. in geology. He served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War.
Michie began his professional career as a geologist in 1951 in Canada when he became mines geologist with Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, a position he held until 1967. He subsequently became chief geologist with Aunor Gold Mines. He continued in a similar capacity when the operations of Aunor, Pamour and Hallnor were merged into the Noranda group of companies. His association with Noranda spanned the 5-year period prior to his joining the Coniagas group of companies in 1972.
