Scholarship to honour Ward

A scholarship in memory of geologist Marie-Claire Ward will be presented to a student enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in geology at a Canadian university.

Ward, who was chairman of Watts, Griffis & McOuat (WGM), died recently after a lengthy battle with cancer. The scholarship is a joint effort of the Geological Association of Canada (GAC), the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), and WGM, as well as friends and colleagues of Ward. A committee of representatives of those organizations will select the winner.

The recipient must be involved in a geoscience project that includes geological mapping of a largely undocumented area. The scholarship could be renewed for a second year.

Scholarship organizers are looking to raise $90,000-$100,000. The interest from the principal will be used to fund the annual endowment. The first scholarship will likely be awarded in the spring of 2005.

Ward was a champion of Canadian geoscience and spent her latter years as its advocate. As head of the geoscience committee with the PDAC, she frequently attended Canadian mines ministers conferences. She also served as the president of the Geological Association of Canada.

“Marie-Claire put a lot of effort into promoting government funding of geoscience in Canada, and geological mapping in particular,” says Ross Lawrence, principal consultant with WGM. “We felt that a scholarship to support a grad student working in the geological mapping area would serve as a suitable memorial to her.”

The scholarship fund will be administered by the Canadian Geological Foundation through the GAC Endowment Trust Fund.

Donations can be made via cheque or credit card. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Geological Foundation (Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award), and sent to the Geological Association of Canada, c/o GAC Endowment Trust Fund, Alexander Murray Building, Room ER4063, Dept. of Earth Sciences, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s, Nfld. A1B 3X5.

A credit card donation form is available by visiting pdac.ca. Tax receipts will be issued for donations greater than $10.
