Stock markets turned up modestly in the United States during the reporting period June 13-19, thanks to buying support in the middle of the week that lifted stock prices off recent lows. Money went first into the blue chips: the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.4%, to 10,942.11, at the same time that the more broadly based Standard & Poor’s 500 index was rising 0.3%, to 1,240.14.
Metal prices recovered during the period as well, though they seem to have settled into a more reasonable range. That helped the major producers in both metal sectors to post gains, but just as investors in the broader market had gone first to the biggest companies, so did buyers in the metals sectors.
The new broad indicator in the U.S. gold equity market, the Amex Gold Miners Exchange Traded Fund, was down US18 during the period at US$33.60, having hit bottom at US$31.82 on June 13. The two biggest gold miners were higher, with Newmont Mining up US64 at US$49.16 and AngloGold Ashanti up US$1.39 at US$41.42. Other than AngloGold, the South African producers fell back, with Gold Fields down US14 at US$17.26, Harmony Gold Mining down US37 at US$12.57, and DRDGold down a nickel at US$1.16.
Randgold Resources, just returned to the Financial Times’ FTSE gold index, was among the winners in the mid-tier, rising US28 to US$17.97. Another was Minas Buenaventura, which was US2 better at US$25.26. Elsewhere, middle-sized gold producers lagged behind the big boys, with Hecla Mining off US19 at US$4.27 and Coeur d’Alene Mines sliding US20 to US$4.12.
The base metal miners, whose sellers must have been tapped out after the recent slide, were almost uniformly better. Anglo American did the best in proportion to price, rising US58 to US$18.00, while Companhia Vale do Rio Doce was US51 better at US$21.05. The winner among the copper- sensitive stocks was Southern Peru Copper, which rose US83 to US$73.60, but Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold was more typical of the group, tacking on US26 to finish at US$46.97.
