The junior mining-dominated S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index continued to inch out gains over the June 27-30 session, which was shortened by the Canada Day holiday. The index closed up 61 points at 2,635.2, while average daily trading volumes also edged higher to 39.2 million shares over the period.
The weekly bull-versus-bear tally had 17 companies rising to new annual highs against 28 junior explorers sliding to new 52-week lows.
Plexmar Resources took volume leader position after trading 29.6 million shares and closing up two pennies at 41. Channel sampling of a new vein system at its Bolsa del Diablo project in Peru returned grades of up to 635 grams gold per tonne. The company also announced it is acquiring an adjacent land package to Aurelian Resources’ Fruta del Norte gold discovery in southern Ecuador.
Shares of Cash Minerals rallied 42%, or 23, to close the week at 78 on volume of 6.5 million shares. Drilling is under way on the company’s Lumina and Igor uranium projects in the Wernecke Mountain area of the Yukon.
Goldmarca was again amongst volume leaders, trading just over 6 million shares and edging up a penny to 67. Recent high-grade gold intercepts from its Condor Gold project, in southeastern Ecuador has spurred investor interest in the company, which has also lined up a $10.3-million financing.
Birch Mountain Resources traded 3.5 million shares over the week, but slipped 7 to close at $5.60. The stock has slumped since the release of a revised independent valuation of its Hammerstone limestone-aggregate deposit in the Athabasca oilsands region of northeastern Alberta. A pretax net present value of $1.65 billion was assigned to the project.
Greenland-focused diamond hunter Hudson Resources traded almost 3.1 million shares on the session, closing up a dime at $1.62 per share. Drilling at its Garnet Lake kimberlite dyke project is confirming recent seismic survey results that indicated a shallowly dipping structure. The company also plans a mini-bulk sample from the dyke.
Tournigan Gold saw over 2.5 million shares change hands over the week, trading up 14 to close at $1.72. It recently entered into a joint-venture agreement on three of AuEx Ventures’ gold-silver projects in Nevada.
Shares in Rainy River Resources grabbed an even dollar to close up 37% at $3.70 apiece on volume of almost 790,000. The latest drilling on its namesake project in northwestern Ontario has returned grades of up to 15.9 grams gold over 12 metres.
Following the resignations of its president and a director, Latin American Minerals lost almost 37% of its share price closing down 22 at 38 on volume of over 200,000.
Market darling Aurelian Resources saw further profit taking, trading down 27 to close the week at $18.30 on volume of almost 1.6 million shares. Investors await drill results testing the width of the structure hosting high-grade epithermal gold mineralization at its Condor project in southeastern Ecuador.
