TSX Venture Exchange August 8-14

A slight sag in gold and copper prices over the week was matched by a 43.33-point decline in the junior mining dominated S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index, which closed the Aug. 8-14 trading session at 2,603.29, with average daily trading volumes of 42.5 million shares.

Gainers and decliners were almost deadlocked over the week, with 34 companies touching new annual highs, while 36 explorers slid to 52-week lows.

Volume-trading frontrunner Plexmar Resources once again topped the most-active board with almost 23.5 million shares changing hands to gain over 52%, closing the week up 25.5 at 74. With Peruvian government approvals now in hand to operate its Bolsa del Diablo epithermal gold project, which lies in the Ecuadorian border region, the company recently closed a $2.1-million financing earmarked for further exploration.

Tagish Lake Gold traded over 10 million shares over the session, gaining 2.5 to close at 18.5. Drill results from a series of holes on the Rainbow Two zone at its Skukum Creek project in the southern Yukon returned a number of high-grade gold intercepts.

Shares of Anglo-Canadian Uranium rallied 23%, or 14, to close the week at 74 apiece on volume of 5 million. The company recently acquired the O8 project in northwestern New Mexico, which is adjacent to a past-producing uranium mine that ceased operation in the 1980s.

ECU Silver Mining closed up 28 to $2.57 per share on volume of over 4 million over the week. Underground sampling at its Santa Juana mine, in Mexico’s Durango state, delivered further high-grade gold and silver mineralization in a number of narrow vein sets.

On trading volume of over 4 million shares, Strateco Resources gained 15 to close at $1.25 on the session. The company announced its plans of distributing 20 million shares of the soon-to-be-listed company Cadiscor to its shareholders. Cadiscor is being spun out of Strateco to hold the gold assets of the company.

Goldmarca notched up four pennies to close the week at 67 per share on volume of almost 3.5 million. Geological interpretation of its Eccolmetals property in southern Ecuador indicated prospective zones of gold mineralization located 300 metres west of Aurelian Resources’ Fruta del Norte project.

Eluvial bulk-sample results of 0.62 carat per cubic metre from the Collier 04 kimberlite pipe at Diagem’s Property 214, in Brazil’s Mato Grosso state, prompted a 78% boost in the company’s stock; shares in Diagem closed up 7 at 16 on trading volume of over 3 million shares.

Shares of Commander Resources gained over 40% on the week on volume of almost 2.3 million to close at 66 apiece. Exploration on the company’s Newfoundland uranium projects returned high U3O8 values from boulder float plus significant values from surface bedrock chip sampling.

Northern Alberta aggregate producer Birch Mountain Resources lost 89 per share over the session to close at $4.38 on trading volume of over 1 million shares.
