Commodity prices took a tumble that translated into lower share prices for most resource companies listed on U.S. markets during the report period ended Sept. 11. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index shed 11.47 points to close at 1,299.54 as investors looked to other sectors to make trading gains.
Energy companies were particularly hard hit, with Peabody Energy losing US$8.72 to close at US$35.98 in heavy volume, and Arch Coal down US$5.32 to US$28.33.
Robust prices for uranium helped Uranerz Energy to escape the commodity downturn. The company was up almost a dime to US$2.53.
Gold companies came under downward pressure, led once again by Newmont Mining, whose share price goes up and down with the gold price because of its non-hedging policy. The Denver, Colo.-based company lost US$5.43 to close at US$45.68.
Goldcorp shed another US$2.65 to US$24.70, reflecting a persistent lack of investor enthusiasm for its pricey takeover bid for Glamis Gold.
African-focused gold miner AngloGold Ashanti dropped US$6.05 to US$40.40, in keeping with the general sell-off among gold stocks.
Copper producers also took the brunt of the correction in commodities, with Phelps Dodge tumbling to US$84.05, down US$6.70 over the session. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold fell to US$53.95, off US$5.41 over the period. The company’s core asset is the vast Grasberg copper-gold mine in Indonesia.
Diversified producer Rio Tinto has benefited handsomely from high commodity prices for the past few years, but this market correction clipped US$20.77 off its share price to close at US$184.26.
ASA (Bermuda) posted a loss of US$6.40 to US$56.60, reflecting its exposure to precious metals, diamonds and other precious minerals. The closed-end investment vehicle holds a portfolio of resource companies engaged in exploration, mining and processing of precious metals and minerals, and also invests in gold, silver and platinum bullion or securities that replicate their price movements.
The largest percentage movers were a handful of junior companies, led by Brookmount Explorations, which is exploring its core Mercedes 100 gold property in Peru, and the more recently acquired Rock Creek polymetallic prospect in the Greenwood mining division of south-central British Columbia. Brookmount gained US0.03 to close at US13.5.
Alcoa also lost ground over the session, off US$1.85 to US$27.16 as investors lightened up on their exposure to industrials and resource stocks, at least for the time being.
