TSX Venture Exchange Nov. 21-27

Modest rallies in precious and base metals prices gave some buoyancy to the junior mining-dominated S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index, gaining 4.5% or 117.91 points over the Nov. 21-27 trading session to close at 2,748.41. The bullish sentiment also boosted average daily trading volumes, up significantly to around 77.3 million shares.

The junior mining rally was also reflected in the weekly bulls-versus-bears battle with 55 venture board companies rising to new 52-week highs over the week, while 40 explorers slid to yearly lows.

A 7.3-million share market cross prompted a flurry of trading in Cantex Mine Development, propelling it to most active on the week. Shares in Cantex, which has been exploring its Al Hariqah gold project in Yemen, closed up a penny at 9 on 13.1 million shares traded.

Strateco Resources continued to post strong gains, closing up 19% or 33 at $2.10 per share on trading volume of 12.9 million. Drilling at its Otish Mountain-area Matoush project in Quebec recently cut up to 5.6 metres of 1.68% U3O8.

Discovery of a new platinum-palladium zone on its Plateau PGE project near Matagami, Que. propelled Hinterland Metals to a 45% gain, closing up 4.5 at 14.5 per share on volume of 11.6 million shares. Drilling cut a 3-metre interval averaging 1.9 grams combined platinum and palladium per tonne.

Pele Mountain Resources saw more than 10.1 million shares change hands on the week, gaining 33 to close up 84% at 71 per share. Drilling by joint-venture partner Wallbridge Mining on the Sudbury, Ont., project discovered a breccia belt hosting anomalous platinum group metal mineralization. Additionally, drilling on Pele’s northern Ontario Highland project tapped into a new gold-copper-bearing shear zone.

Shares of aspiring miner Aurcana gained more than 50% to close the week up 38 at $1.13 apiece on volume of 8.7 million. The company recently ordered mining equipment for its underground La Negra silver-zinc-copper-lead mine in Queretaro, Mexico. It has been stockpiling ore and expects to begin production in the first quarter of 2007.

Following another set of drill results from its El Corazon project in Ecuador, Skeena Resources posted weekly volume of 8.7 million shares but shed a penny to close at 37 per share. Recent drilling returned up to 5 metres of 17.9 grams gold.

Despite posting a US$48.9-million loss in its fiscal 2006, uranium producer UrAsia Energy continued its gains to close up 15 at $3.78 per share on volume of over 6.7 million shares. Inferred resources at its South Inkai uranium project in Kazakhstan recently saw a 69% boost following a revised estimate of about 43.5 million contained pounds U3O8. The company also operates its Akdala uranium mine in the country.

An earlier magazine tout continued to stir up investor interest in Purepoint Uranium Group, trading over 6.1 million shares on the week and closing up 19 to $1.07. It is exploring its Turnor Lake project in northern Saskatchewan’s Athabasca basin.
