The TSX Composite Index set a record high of 13,311.95 points during the the Feb. 13-19 trading session, before closing the week at 13,291.55, up 251.01 points.
Every sector saw gains except the energy sector, which dropped after forecasts of warmer weather.
The Global Gold Index rose 4.2 points to 329.01, the S&P-TSX Metals & Mining Index was up $47.24 to $660.52 and the London fix gold price climbed US$6.20 to US$670.75 per oz.
Canada’s materials sector advanced over the period. Copper topped US$2.60 per lb., nickel increased US$1.19 to US$18.39 per lb. after peaking at US$18.70 over the period, and aluminum inched up about US3.5 to US$1.30.
Equinox Minerals topped the most-active list with more than 57 million shares traded. The stock rose 31 over the week, closing at $2.05. The company announced a $175-million bought-deal financing to fund the development of its Lumwana copper project in Zambia. Starting in the second quarter of 2008, the $407.6-million project will produce an average of 169,000 tonnes of copper per year for the first six years of its 37-year life.
Chariot Resources was the next most active, rising just 4 to 77 on more than 40 million shares traded. The company is developing its 70%-owned Marcona copper project in Peru, which is scheduled to start production by 2009.
Eastern Platinum’s stock was also active, gaining 23 to $1.88 on about 33 million shares traded. The company, which has several platinum projects in South Africa, announced record-setting revenue of $28.4 million for the second quarter, ended Dec. 31, 2006.
Also on the list was newsmaker SRX Uranium One, which announced a takeover bid for UrAsia Energy that would create a $5-billion uranium company. The stock closed $2.01 higher at $16.80 on trading volume of nearly 22 million shares.
And Agnico-Eagle Mines’ bid to take over Cumberland Resources drove Cumberland’s share price up $1.54 to $8.49 on volume of 33 million. Cumberland’s 100%-owned Meadowbank open-pit gold project in Nunavut, set to open by 2010, will produce 400,000 oz. over its first four years.
Agnico came in at second place for value lost during the period; its shares dropped 94 to close at $49.11 on trading volume of nearly 8.6 million shares.
Aber Diamond lost the most value during the session, falling $3.13 to $43.86 on trading volume of over 1.1 million. Aber has a 40% stake in the Diavik diamond mine in the Northwest Territories. First Quantum Minerals, which mines copper, gold and sulphuric acid in Africa, topped the value list with a gain of $9.75, closing at $69.98.
