U.S. Markets March 27-April 2

United States stock markets spent much of the trading period March 27-April 2 treading water, with both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index down fractionally. Generally upbeat news from the broad economy — U.S. gross domestic product growth was 2.5%, annualized, at the end of 2006 — was balanced by increasing crude oil prices and musings from Federal Reserve Bank chairman Ben Bernanke that inflation was higher than the Bank expected.

In the resource stocks, declining stocks led advancing ones 89 to 69, with most of the large base metal miners gaining ground and most of the big gold miners losing it. Leading the base metal group was Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, which rose US$2.03 to US$66.73 on a volume of 75.1 million shares. Southern Copper added US$1.49 to US$72.64, Rio Tinto was up US$2.50 at US$230.60, and Anglo American tacked on US54 to finish at US$26.73, having touched a 52-week high of US$26.69.

Companhia Vale do Rio Doce slid US23 to US$37.37, after above-ground workers at the Sudbury, Ont., operations of CVRD Inco accepted a contract that ended a one-day strike.

Gold bullion prices declined US$5.75 during the period, finishing at US$658.25 per oz. in the London afternoon fixing on April 2. The Philadelphia Gold and Silver Index was up, barely, at 139.30 points, while the unhedged companies in the Amex Gold Bugs Index slid just a little, to 345.16. Newmont Mining paid the price for an analyst’s downgrade, falling US$1.40 to US$42.33, while AngloGold Ashanti was unchanged at US$45.30 and Gold Fields rose US93 to US$19.12. Hecla Mining was among the bigger gainers in the mid-tier, with a US17 rise to US$9.34, to close at a 52-week high.

Among U.S. juniors, molybdenum developer Idaho General Mines picked up US80 for a close of US$4.69. After the April 2 close, Coghill Capital Management, which owns about 37% of Idaho General’s stock, said in a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it was proposing a business combination to the company, which holds the Mount Hope and Hall-Tonopah molydenum projects in Nevada.
