TSX Venture Exchange May 8-14

U.S. dollar gains chipped away at precious metal prices, while copper also slipped over the May 8-14 trading session. The S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index gave up 60.14 points over the period to close at 3,309.65 with average daily trading volumes remaining strong at 108 million shares.

The market exhibited a strong bullish trend over the week, with 78 junior explorers touching new 52-week highs compared with just 21 that dropped to new annual lows.

Yukon Zinc took top trading honours with 25.2 million shares changing hands, closing the week up 2.5 at 27.5 per share. Recently closing a $10.2-million brokered private-placement financing earmarked for its Wolverine zinc-silver project. The company plans to build a road to the mine site.

Shares of Unor shed 11 on the session, closing at 41 apiece on trading volume of almost 17.7 million. With Cameco holding a 19.5% stake in the company, the junior recently launched a $7-million exploration program on its uranium projects in Nunavut.

Manson Creek posted an 88% gain on trading volume of almost 16 million shares, closing the week up 10.5 at 22.5 per share. It recently wrapped up a 7-hole, 1,988-metre drill program on the CR molybdenum-copper project in northern British Columbia, with samples sent for assaying.

On a rally of 33%, Afri-Can Marine Minerals remained a strong trader with 11.7 million shares changing hands to close at 42 per share, up 10.5. The company is exploring offshore diamond concessions in Namibia.

Searchgold Resources continued to drop over the session, closing down 2.5 at 21.5 per share on 11.2 million shares traded. Recent drilling on the company’s Mandiana gold project in Guinea, West Africa, cut a number of gold-mineralized intercepts.

Gravity West Mining gained three pennies on the week to close at 18.5 on 9.4 million shares traded. The company optioned a Chilean copper property and also completed an airborne survey over its Sibley basin uranium properties in northwestern Ontario.

Initial drill results from its Selodong project in Indonesia prompted a 117% share price surge in Southern Arc Minerals, which closed up 81 at $1.50 per share on volume of more than 8.8 million shares. The hole cut 443 metres averaging 0.28% copper and 0.42 gram gold including 105 metres of 0.6% copper and 1.04 grams gold in the porphyry.

Following an updated resource estimate on its Saddle Hills uranium project in Mongolia, Western Prospector Group closed the week down 95 at $4.95 per share on trading volume of 957,000. The new estimate for the Gurvanbulag Central deposit stands at 2.83 million indicated tonnes of 0.22% U3O8 (about 13.6 million contained lbs. U3O8) plus an additional 2.67 million inferred tonnes of 0.15% U3O8 (containing 8.6 million lbs. U3O8).

Shares of U3O8 shed as much as 29% following a pair of drill hole results from its Aricheng project in Guyana that returned up to 7.5 metres of 0.125% U3O8. The company closed the week down 87 at $3.88 per share on trading volume of 2.7 million.
