U.S. Markets May 8-14

In a trading period when U.S. equity markets moved generally sideways, the mining sectors headed both ways — the golds down, and the base metal and coal miners up. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index slipped a little — 6.33 points, to 1,503.15 — while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained marginally between May 8 and May 14. But in the shadow of a US$14.25-per-oz. fall in the gold price, gold indexes were beaten badly; the Philadelphia Index was off 5.78 points, about 4% of value, to 137.36, while the Amex Gold Bugs Index fell 4.4%.

Great and small got smacked in the gold sector; AngloGold Ashanti led the downward trend, falling US$2.08 to US$42.87, while Newmont Mining fell US$1.47 to US$41.50 and Gold Fields US$1.19 to US$16.98. Mid-tier golds were also weaker, Randgold Resources sliding US$1.05 to US$23.79 and Minas Buenaventura US70 to US$33.27.

Silver producer Coeur d’Alene Mines was the most actively traded of the precious metal stocks, slipping US20 to US$3.63. Coeur, and takeover targets Palmarejo Silver and Gold and Bolnisi Gold formed a management committee to oversee operation of the Palmarejo silver project in Chihuahua state, Mexico.

Stillwater Mining was down US$1.94 to US$12.24, after reporting a loss of US$1.1 million on revenues of US$146.5 million in the first quarter of 2005. Stillwater, whose costs were stable, is also facing labour negotiations at its Stillwater, Mont., mining and smelting complex.

The mover among the base metal stocks was Rio Tinto, which jumped US$10.94 to US$280.05. Market speculation had BHP Billiton preparing a bid for Rio, which got a strict “no comment” from both parties. BHP was down US74 at US$51.26. The most active base metal stock was Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, which added US27 to finish at US$43.72.

The coal miners had a good five days, with Yanzhou Coal Mining leading the pack with a US$10.28 gain to close at US$63.41. Westmoreland Coal rose US$1.92 to US$26.57 and Consol Energy US$1.74 to US$45.15.
