Copper and gold prices inched up over the June 12-18 trading session, propping up the S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index for a 32.49-point gain to 3,226.18. Average daily trading volumes retracted to just under 70 million shares.
The bearish trend gained steam over the week with 47 junior explorers managing new 52-week highs against 74 that dropped to new annual lows.
A strong nickel intercept from its Jacobus project near Beardmore, in northwestern Ontario, drove Sage Gold to top trader for the week. Its shares posted a 52% gain to close up 5.5 at 16 apiece on volume of more than 33 million shares. Drilling cut 8.5 metres of true thickness grading 0.95% nickel and 1.16% copper.
Northern Abitibi Mining gained about 10% over the session to close up 3 at 30 per share on trading volume of 19.1 million shares. The company didn’t release any news, but it recently closed a $550,000 financing earmarked for its Taylor Brook nickel-copper-cobalt-platinum group elements project located in northwestern Newfoundland.
Shares of Geoinformatics Exploration continued to post gains, adding a nickel to close at 27 apiece on trading volume of 19 million shares. It is optioning the Whistler copper-gold porphyry project in Alaska from Rio Tinto subsidiary Kennecott.
Golden Chalice Resources shed 45 on the week closing down at $3.00 per share on volume of 16.6 million. The second hole on its Timmins, Ont.-area Langmuir nickel discovery cut 14.9 metres of 2.36% nickel, including higher-grade sections.
With an $8-million financing recently under its belt, RPT Uranium saw its shares post a 27% gain to close the week up 15 at 70 apiece on volume of almost 11 million shares. Funds have been allocated for exploration of its projects in northern Saskatchewan and in the Sibley basin of northwestern Ontario.
Northwestern Mineral Ventures got a boost on recent news of its joint venture with UraMin to form a new company holding uranium projects in Niger. Its shares jumped 34% on the week to close at $1.07 apiece on trading volume of 10.1 million shares.
Still reeling from a recent appeals court decision affirming last year’s judgment awarding title of the Navidad silver project in Argentina to TSX-listed Aquiline Resources, IMA Exploration managed to claw back four pennies to close the week at 41 per share on trading volume of 9.6 million.
On the heels of a $20-million financing, Serengeti Resources saw shareholders take home some profits; the company’s stock slipped 68 to $3.48 per share on trading volume of 1.1 million shares. Serengeti is awaiting assays from 11 holes on its Kwanika copper-gold porphyry project in central B.C.’s Quesnel Trough.
Shares of Seabridge Gold tested new highs, closing up $3.33 at $20.75 apiece on volume of 1.3 million. Xstrata recently exercised its warrants in the prospective gold developer, cashing up the treasury to the tune of $27 million.
