Despite a modest up-tick in gold and base metals, the junior mining-dominated S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index closed out the Canada Day-shortened June 26-29 trading session on an off note, down 15.5 points at 3,174.39. Daily average trading volumes came in at a bolstered 82.4 million shares.
The market turned strongly bearish over the week with only 17 junior explorers managing new 52-week highs, while 81 slid to new yearly lows.
Simberi Mining jumped to top trader status after signing a deal giving Amari Holdings the right to earn up to 65% in its subsidiary, which holds joint-venture rights on the Kakanda copper project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with state-owned miner Gcamines. Shares in Simberi notched up half a penny to 7.5 apiece on trading volume of over 12.2 million.
Goldcrest Resources posted a 30% gain to close the session up 27 at $1.18 per share on trading volume of almost 7.6 million shares. Investors remained keen on recent drill results from its Gaoua project, in Burkina Faso, which returned more copper and gold. Shareholders also recently approved the sale of the company’s Youanmi gold project in western Australia to Apex Minerals for A$10 million.
Northern Abitibi Mining remained a strong trader with over 6.5 million shares changing hands, but closed off 2.5 at 28 per share. It recently wrapped up an initial round of fieldwork on its Taylor Brook polymetallic project in Newfoundland.
Brazilian-focused diamond hunter Iciena Ventures traded 6.3 million shares on the week, posting a 1.5 gain at 11.5 per share. It announced an agreement to acquire a 630-sq.-km claim block in the western state of Mato Grosso.
Shares of Silver Spruce Resources posted a 28% gain over the week, closing up 37 at $1.69 apiece on trading volume of 4.2 million shares. Lake sediment sampling at the company’s Labrador CMB joint venture, with Universal Uranium, returned uranium values.
Trading in GoldQuest Mining remained strong, with shares closing 9 higher at $1.02 per share on more than 4.1 million shares of volume. Drilling on the company’s Las Animas VMS project in the western Dominican Republic sparked investor interest following a recent 142-metre intercept of 2.6% copper, 1.9% zinc and 2.5 grams gold.
Golden Chalice Resources took back some ground, posting a 20% gain on the week to close up 56 at $3.37 per share on trading volume of 2.6 million shares. Drilling continues at its Timmins, Ont.-area Langmuir nickel discovery, where the second hole cut 14.9 metres of 2.36% nickel including higher-grade sections.
After recently posting strong gains, shares of Indonesian-focused copper-gold explorer Southern Arc Minerals dropped 23% on the week, closing off 55 at $1.85 per share on volume of over 3.5 million shares. Recent drilling of its Montong Botek porphyry copper-gold target on the Selodong project cut 363.5 metres of 0.3% copper and 0.5 gram gold per tonne.
