South of the border, stock markets rose during the period July 10-16, with market indexes setting year-long highs in the last three trading days of the period. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (perhaps soon to be renamed “the Rupert”) finished at 13,950.98, up 301.01 points or 2.2% over the period, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index finally broke through its March 2000 all-time high and finished at 1,549.52.
Gold bullion prices finished, um, devilishly higher, the traders’ flags having come down at US$666 per oz. on the afternoon of July 16. That was a US$4.75 increase during the period, which worked better for the broad gold equity market than it did for the unhedged crowd; the Philadelphia Gold and Silver Index rose 2% to 149.51, while the Amex Gold Bugs Index — the non-hedgers — fell 1% to 352.70. All in all, resource stocks split almost evenly between advancers and decliners during the period.
Gold Fields recovered from some difficult weeks, rising US$1.08 to US$17.42. AngloGold Ashanti was also better, rising US$1.54 to US$42.87, but Newmont Mining fell US89 to US$41.11. Newmont floated US$1.15 billion in unsecured convertible notes, half paying at 1.25% until 2014 and the other half 1.625% until 2017. About US$880 million of that will go to knock out existing debt.
Speaking of knocking out debt, Rio Tinto presumably put an end to the Alcan takeover battle with a US$101-per-share bid that knocked out hostile bidder Alcoa. Rio was down US$24.88 to US$301.70, and Alcoa, now considered almost a sure takeover target, was up US$4.41 to US$46.77. Rio Tinto takes on US$46 billion in debt, which it plans to cut down through some asset sales, including Alcan’s packaging division.
There were some big gains from other base metal producers: Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold ran up US$4.36 to US$92.94, Southern Copper added US$6.26 to finish at US$109.59, and Companhia Vale do Rio Doce picked up US$2.18 to close at US$50.76.
